Low Resolution Digital images (pictures) do not do my floors 'justice' ... The Bravest of the Brave...By definition, people who choose "to go" with new 'distressed' wideplank Red Pine flooring are brave, but ...I have never met a couple so brave ... Here they were, living an upscale lifestyle and contemplating a disruptive renovation that would involve rebuilding their flooring (from the bottom up) in a dramatic and daring RUSTIC fashion that most people could not fathom in a city home, let alone, a penthouse condominium along the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa.
As The-Lady-of-the-House said: "We wanted something that was unique. I shopped for this "distressed look" for two years ... I was surprised to find Marreed-Prestman on my doorstep ... I knew what I wanted ... this is it."
Marreed-Prestman concedes that, by nature, there is no such thing as a ‘standard’ or 'easy' job ... every installation is unique but this installation was particularly challenging and most rewarding. Working with June and Bruce, we developed specifications to conform to their vision: ten (10") inch wideplank, Red Pine, T&G floorboards ... with a walnut stain, Heavy 'Distressing', a Diagonal Layout/Pattern in the hallways, dining room, living room and master bedroom and a (square) Butt-Style Layout/Pattern in the kitchen and study room. The transparent stain was to be 'bleached' along the seams and butt-end joints to produce one of my artistic special effects called, ‘Tundra’. The top finish would comprise of multiple FloodCoats of my clear ‘Diamond-Tough’ finish (which the manufacturer claims is twice as dense and twice as durable as conventional floor finishes due to the fact that this product contains an Aluminium-Oxide Cured resin (new technology) as opposed to the less durable Epoxy (old technology). The specifications were ‘exacting’ and the job adventuresome ... but, matters were made more challenging by the fact that we first had to build to specifications (from the concrete floor and up) ... lay a heavy, dense soundproofing material to conform to "condo rules" and then build a sub-floor over the concrete floor onto which we could fasten the wideplank floor boards.
"To ‘complicate’ matters, the couple had ‘nowhere to go’ with their prized furniture ... the job was done in two (2) stages. The major appliances and the furniture from the dining and living rooms were stored in the master bedroom and study room while we completed Phase-I over a period of ten (10) days. After which, June and Bruce had a few days to relocate their appliances and furniture from the master bedroom and study room to the kitchen, living room and dining room. At that point, we completed the soundproofing, sub-floor and wideplank flooring in the master bedroom and study room ... another eight (8) days ... It was a marathon ... a labour of love."The result of this brave couple’s extraordinary vision and eclectic good taste is nothing short of magical.
